RED HAT RAM IRON DISC CLUTCH SYSTEMS
For applications up to 1200 horsepower where controlling the function of the clutch is critical, the Red Hat RAM single iron clutch is an ideal choice. A properly tuned clutch system will allow for some ‘slip’ on launch and accelerate the car smoothly through the gear changes. This will help maximize performance, while reducing the shock to the rear tires and the driveline. When tuned correctly, your Red Hat RAM will enable you to optimize your combination and produce the quickest and fastest runs, all while minimizing the maintenance required during the event.
A key feature of the Red Hat RAM clutch systems is the billet aluminum pressure ring. Machined from a 7075 T6 blank, it features an outer retaining ridge that helps retain the 6 segmented steel heat shields. By segmenting these shields versus a single solid insert, the ring is able to expand and contract without the warpage that typically occurs with a solid insert. Another significant benefit is that this results in extended life as well. It allows you to resurface your unit multiple times without needing to replace the entire pressure ring insert.
These same segmented inserts are used on the aluminum flywheel. Because these segments are bolted in, they can be serviced in the field by the user if necessary.
5135 compound sintered iron is a high coefficient of friction material. What this means is that lower static pressures may be used compared to conventional clutch materials. Red Hat RAM units are available in a variety of starting adjustable base pressures including 360, 500, 800, 1200, and 1500 pounds. The billet counterweighted lever design give the user considerably more flexibility in tuning the clutch lock up compared to forged levers. A 5135 compound sintered iron disc handles the slippage without overheating and allows the Red Hat RAM’s adjustability to handle ever changing racing conditions.
Don’t forget to ask about the newer stand driven pressure ring option! This design adds significant strength to the driving mechanism in the pressure plate for an extra level of confidence about the stability and performance of your Red Hat system. The option is strongly recommended for higher RPM applications, and existing Red Hat systems can be upgraded to this plate design also!
Red Hat RAM clutch systems are available completely assembled and ready to install on a custom order basis from the factory, or you can assemble your own package using the components listed below. Simply select the pressure plate, clutch disc to match your transmission spline, and flywheel to match your engine. Add a 492 stud set and 550 shim set in order to set the system up to the correct ring height on the flywheel once you receive it. A complete video outlining the assembly of the unit is linked to the right hand side of this page.
